Auditory Pleasures // #4

First of all, happy new year to everyone who reads Faux. Welcome back to the first Auditory Pleasures of 2010, head back each week to find out which tracks have caught my ear over the past seven days.

miikesnow

Miike SnowSilvia

Not a new song as such, Silvia is featured on Miike Snow’s debut album. A video to accompany the track has seen Silvia become more widespread over the past week, and rightly so. Miike Snow are not ones to be quaffed at, producing solid indie pop songs left right and centre the band were remixed to the death in 2009. Silvia is one of the best songs from Miike Snow’s self titled debut album, catchy yet dark and mysterious the track sums up the Swedish trio in 6 minutes 26 seconds.

majorlazer

Major LazerKeep It Goin’ Louder (Diplo Remix)

Diplo has taken it upon himself to remix one of his own tracks which was released under his collaboration project Major Lazer (which consists of Diplo and Switch). A novel approach, maybe he felt there was something missing from the original and wanted to enhance it. Nevertheless his remix of Keep It Goin’ Louder is even catchier than the original and cements Diplo’s place as one of the top electro remixers around right now.

brokenbells

Broken BellsThe High Road

Broken Bells is a collaboration between Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley fame and James Mercer the lead singer of The Shins. The High Road is an oddly compelling track which doesn’t immediately hit you upon first listen but manages to embed itself into your conciousness with each additional playing. In 2009 it seemed every band were collaborating or creating ‘supergroups’, none of which really stood out or offered anything new. Hopefully 2010 will be different, starting with Broken Bells.

thepixies

PixiesWhere Is My Mind? (Bassnectar Remix)

Where Is My Mind? comes from Pixies first full album Surfer Rosa which was released way back in 1988, that’s now three decades ago. Amazingly the track has stood the test of time and still sounds as new and as fresh as many releases from 2009. Bassnectar’s remix takes the track in a different direction, adding a heavy bassline and some electro elements. Although Pixies fans may snub any remixes, rightly so as most I’ve heard in the past are pretty dire, Bassnectar’s take on the classic shows the song in a different light and may help Pixies find a few new fans.
