OH MY! I’ve been a big fan of the first two Purge films, I have a soft spot for high concept pieces that require the viewer to buy into an outlandish concept and consider new rules within the film, it’s a great way to step out of reality and focus solely on the material at hand.
Whilst the first Purge film (The Purge) was an above average film, the series didn’t find its footing until it’s sequel “The Purge: Anarchy” – wherein it moved away from it’s initial horror/murder focus to a more survival/action theme – something which was executed to perfection.
After the success of the sequel both critically and commercially, The Purge was prepped to become THE new yearly horror/action-ish franchise. Without a new instalment in 2015, we now have a new trailer for the third instalment and it’s Election Year! – obviously waiting for the actual US election year to align.
For “The Purge: Election Year” it’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn… or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.
