Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, Young Rival are a trio who produce sugary indie pop that draws much more influence from past musical heroes and bygone sounds than their contemporaries. That’s not to say they’re obsessed with recreating a retro sound, YR’s strength is in the appreciation of classical pop structure, musicality and melody in their most timeless forms – but with added scruffiness (aided by production from Fuckedup/Tokyo Police Club producer Jon Drew). It’s hard to pin down their sound, because they’re still searching for it, crate digging and soaking up sounds from all genres – one minute we’re in garage rock the next a puppy-love ballad.
Their latest track ‘Two Reasons’ is the debut single taken from the forthcoming album Stay Young. The video has just dropped (check it out above) and has an interesting story behind the (frankly awesome) visuals. The band discovered the work of facepaint artist James Kuhn via Reddit in late 2011, emailed him and begged to collaborate, then spent the best part of a year receiving 25 hand mailed cd’s with video clips of Kuhn miming along to the track – the clips were then edited together by the boys into the final video.
