The debut feature from writer/director Brandon Cronenberg looks to follow in the footsteps of his father David Cronenberg. David Cronenberg is the king of body horror and known for creating deeply clinical and uncomfortable films that have split opinions of audiences worldwide and the younger seems to have inherited that knack.
Antiviral is set in a world where celebrity obsessions have become even sicker than the human bear bating and obsessive stalking that exists in our current culture. Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) fronts a biotech firm that signs exclusive deals with celebrities to harvest their ailments and diseases to sell onto adoring fans. Model Hannah Geist (Sarah Gadon) is their star client and Edward Porris (Douglas Smith) pays to be infected with her herpes in the place he would have caught it from kissing her. The disease later kills Hannah and he has to fight to find out why to save himself from meeting the same demise. Syd meanwhile takes to selling the diseases to back alley pirates, who reverse engineer the diseases to recreate their hosts muscle mass and limbs which are then sold in a shady cannibalistic butcher shop for the wealthy.
