“I wanna build you up/brick by brick”. “I wanna rock and roll/brick by brick”. Not, perhaps, what you’d expect to hear from former man-of-the-people, then desert roaming self-exiled poet Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys.
It is perhaps disappointing that Turner has put on hold the more adventurous side of his writing, but it shows an interesting restraint, and puts the spotlight instead on the White Album-esque vibes of this economic little rock and roll number, and on the sunshine chorus – reminiscent of Britpop’s breezier moments.
The V Festival masses hoping for more songs about Sheffield will be disappointed, as, much like last album Humbug, this sound is a million miles away from the ruckus that defined British indie in the mid noughties, but this sixties worshipping garage may earn more fans than the difficult, angular desert rock of ‘My Propeller’ and ‘Crying Lightning.’
There’s no official word on whether this track will feature on the new album, due out sometime before summer, but it gives a positive idea of what to expect. They’ve built us up, let’s just hope they knock us down all over again.
