February 28th saw the release of Tinie Tempah’s debut single ‘Pass Out’. With a solid beat and memorable lyrics (“been Southampton but i’ve never been to Scunthorpe”), everyone was either singing, humming or dancing to it. Just over 7 months later and he’s had 3 top 10 singles (2 of which were number one’s) and has gained a huge amount of fans in the process including none other than ‘Snoop Dogg’ with whom he performed at Glastonbury earlier this year.
Today sees the release of ‘Disc-Overy’, his debut album. As we’ve come to expect from Tinie, each song has witty lyrics and a catchy beat but it’s probably the collaborators that make this album what it is. With Ellie Goulding, Labrinth, Kelly Rowland and Emile Sandé all lending their vocals and unique style to some of the strongest songs on the album.
‘Wonderman’ is a stand out song which features ‘Ellie Goulding’ and tells a story of what it’s like to be a success and how building up to this ‘wonderman’ status from nothing isn’t as easy as some people are lead to believe.
Now a ‘wonderman’ himself, Tinie Tempah’s debut effort will be accepted by both fans and critics alike. I just hope that when the time comes, he doesn’t struggle with ‘the difficult second album’ syndrome after such a strong, bold and confident first. As long as Tinie works to avoid the few hip-hop cliche’s that drag certain points of the album down, like auto tune on ‘Written In The Stars’ and his moaning about the pressures of fame on ‘Let Go’ (you’ve been famous for 9 months, if you cant handle it, i’d pack it in); he will be just fine.
To coincide with the albums release we have the release of 4th single ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ which features ‘Swedish House Mafia’ (who also produced parts of the album along with Labrinth, Ishi, Al Shux and Naughty Boy, who has previously worked with artists Chipmunk and Wiley) and I’m hoping you’ll excuse the pun but I will ‘pass out’ if this doesn’t become his 3rd number one single. (Editor – Faux does not approve of this joke)
Disc-Overy is available to buy now on Parlophone Records. You can check out the video for Miami 2 Ibiza below as well.
