Apples are good for your health. They’re good for your ears, too. The Hereford quintet are set to release their new single Theo on July 19th. As I’ll explain, it’s perfect timing. The song itself is a patchwork of 60s and 80s styles. Led by a plinky-plonk keyboard that’s heavily reminiscent of early Depeche Mode mixed in with the vocal styles of 1960s boybands. Throw in a bit of saxophone and you’ve got yourself a cutesy summer tune to listen to on the journey to Newquay.
However, it’s tricky to see if they can sustain themselves. The Futureheads have already cornered the market for vocal harmonies and the 80s retro thing is winding down. Apples have to play it carefully if they don’t want to get sucked into the same void that so many similar bands have done. Plain and simple: Apples got mad vocal skills. You can’t sing along to them ‘cause they’re better than you but they won’t laugh at you for trying. Theo is a catchy single and they’re prepping for the big debut album extravaganza. Here’s hoping that they’ll build good stuff on these strong foundations.
Apples release Theo on July 19th through Popular Recordings and you can view the video for the single below.
