While the big boys on the NME Awards Tour played in all the major cities, the North was treated to a choice line up on the Club NME Awards Tour, featuring a line-up full of tips for 2010.
First up were Little Comets, a Newcastle 4-piece who sound a lot like Vampire Weekend. This is not a bad thing I must add, as soon after they started pretty much the entirety of Leeds’ Brudenell Social Club were up on their feet dancing. With an array of instruments on the small stage, including a pan and maraccas hanging from the ceiling. Launching into the energetic ‘Dancing Song’ those that had not been previously swayed were up on their feet singing along to the very catchy chorus.
In a complete and utter turn around next came The Chapman Family. Trying to avoid the obvious comparison of Joy Division, the atmosphere evoked by Kingsley & co was a complete change, bewildering many of the punters. Playing songs such as ‘Virgins’ and ‘Kids’, the crowd struggled to know how to react, especially when Kingsley mock-strangled himself with the microphone lead. The only way to describe these are one of the best bands you’ll see live.
And on to tonights headliners Frankie & The Heartstrings. Bringing with them a sizeable contingent they were definately up for a good time. Playing their single ‘Fragile’ and giving us a fair few new ones too, with ‘Photograph ‘ being a particular favourite of mine, Frankie even got himself stuck in dancing with the crowd. At one point we were even treated to an anecdote about a dog and a pie. If I had to pick the one band that were going to make it in 2010, Frankie & The Heartstrings have superstars written all over them.

I think they're good! Fragile is a tune, plus Huw Stephens loves them, always a good sign!
