Soundtracking The Action

Soundtracks. I never realised until a drunken conversation with friends (after too much Desperados and a couple of piles of cheese on bread) that when we got to discussing songs that defined the last couple of years at school (HA!). Video game soundtracks pretty much shaped my entire music taste at the time. We all started spouting nonsense about nu-metal, our crushes on Avril Lavigne and how depressed we all still get when we here Dillemma by Nelly and Kelly Rowland; Long story.

But after we had sifted through all the crap we used to listen to and argued about its lack of credibilty, although one of the group (who shall remain nameless) would not stop banging on about her love for anything and everything Linkin Park ever did. We realised that a lot of or taste was directly shaped by the games we played at the time. This is the top 5 in game soundtracks on the Playstation and maybe The Dreamcast from roughly 2000, catchy title I know.

Dave Mirra freestyle BMX (Playstation)

Dave Mirra wasnt an incredible game, but definitely an above average take on the Tony hawks genre (before it got terrible…) but afternoons were wasted laying on a bean bag eating Pot noodle, jumping about on the game and listening to casual hip hop and US punk. It was this game that introduced me to Sublime and started my love affair with the work of Bradley Nowell.

59 Times the Pain – Got it all in Sight
Cypress Hill – Dust
Deftones – Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
Dropkick Murphys – Never Alone
Pennywise – Greed
Primer 55 – Loose

Snapcase – Energy Dome
Social Distortion – Don’t Drag Me Down
Sublime – What I Got
Swingin’ Utters – Stupid Lullabies

Silent Hill (Playstation)

The original soundtrack for Silent Hill was composed by Akira Yamaoka and is 2 hours of creepy orchestral genius. Yamaoka claims to have been influenced by David Lynch, Depeche mode and Metallica. It took me a while to track this down, but got it on Ebay a few years ago and is great background music.

GTA (Playstation)

I never played the PC version, so never had the pleasure of multiple of radio stations on the games, it was simply pot luck with which car you got into on the console version. But the reason I love this soundtrack because everytime I hear Joyride by Da Shootaz come on my Ipod I get all goosebumpy and it always get’s a rewind.

WipEout (Playstation)

Set in the year 2052, players compete in the F3600 anti-gravity racing league, piloting one of a selection of craft in races on several different tracks. Its a fast paced multi coloured trip of a game so what better for the soundtrack than a pile of Dance music that made 1995’s Wipeout a game way ahead of its time.

Afro ride – Leftfield
Chemical Beats – Chemical Brothers
Blue Monday (Hardfloor mix) – New order
The age of love – Age of love
Wipeout – Orbital

Transamazonia (Deep Dish Rockit Express Dub Mix) – The Shamen

Tony Hawks Pro Skater (playstation)

No explanation needed, its punk as fuck mate. This game, its steep learning curve, its soundtrack and the influence the songs had on my music collection are the reason my thumbs have dents in them and my hearing is sub par.

dead kennedys – police truck
the ernies – here & now
even rude – vilified
goldfinger – superman
