The Dead Weather Live @ St. Leonards Church

Words by Theodora Wakeley. The Dead Weather played St. Leonard’s Church, Shoreditch on 31/10/09.

Finishing off their UK tour, the supergroup The Dead Weather decided to kick Halloween off in style with a free gig, announced only the day before, at Shoreditch’s appropriately eerie St. Leonard’s Church for 500 lucky fans.
The group arrived on stage wearing their own custom-made ‘spooky’ outfits, although some members of the audience had gone to a lot more effort and two were awarded for it by Jack White himself with a limited edition CD. The masks were soon off though as the band monstrously ripped through a selection of their finest tracks from their debut album Horehound along with a couple of new ones, leaving the small church struggling to contain their energy (the distortion was awful at times).

Undeniably with any The Dead Weather (and in that case The Raconteurs) gig, the majority of the audience will be there just to witness Jack White and he certainly didn’t disappoint, sauntering to the front of the stage to sing his solo Them cover You Just Can’t Win. Frontwoman Alison Mosshart is also always guaranteed to be enthusiastically intense and entertaining and with no security barriers in place she was able to literally grind her crotch inches from a particularly manic head-banger.

After finishing off their short set with the hits I Cut Like a Buffalo and Treat Me Like Your Mother, they left the crowd screaming for an encore. They didn’t deliver on this but then again they didn’t need to for The Dead Weather had just established their position as another successful Jack White project and given a select few a memorably exceptional Halloween.
